Understanding how soil biota, as a legacy effect of crops, affects the likelihood of establishment of native and exotic plants in newly abandonedly farmland is crucial for managing agricultural weeds. By growing 28 exotic and 30 native herbs, that are common in central China, in sterilized vs. non-sterilized soils collected from a newly abandoned maize field, researches show that the sum effects of soil biota on plants decreased linearly with rising plant intrinsic growth rate. Moreover, soil biota on average had more negative effects on the exotic vs. native plants. See Wei et al. in this issue.
